Applying for the African School of Forensic Sciences and Human Rights


EAAF and its partner organizations are now accepting applications for the African School of Forensic Sciences and Human Rights. The month-long course will be held in Durban, South Africa, initially scheduled to take place during October/November 2012. EAAF staff and other leading forensic specialists will teach modules during the course addressing the following subjects:

 Week 1

  • Preliminary Investigation
  • Collecting Ante-mortem data
  • Creating forensic databases
  • Archaeology

 Week 2

  • Forensic anthropology
  • Forensic genetics
  • Identificaction of human remains in complex cases

Week 3

  • Skeletal trauma, bone pathologies, and other bone-level alteration

 
Week 4

  

  • Documentation of torture
  • Death while in custody
  • Human rights violations evaluations


Upon completion of the course, students will have improved their ability to aid investigations of human rights violations and/or criminal investigations and/or mass disasters in their local medical-legal systems. Further in-depth modules on specific forensic subjects will be offered in the future to increase training in these areas. All classes will be taught in English.

All accepted participants will have their travel and accommodation costs covered for the duration of the course.

Requirements:

  • Experience as a forensic pathologist, anthropologist, geneticist, archaeologist, or other forensic or medical personnel, and/or have worked at a human rights NGO.
  • At least 3 years experience in your field
  • Institutional authorization
  • Ability to communicate in English

  • Cover Letter (describing interest in the program)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A letter of support from employing institution (if applicable)

With EAAF approval, these supporting documents may be submitted in a language other than English.
